OVERVIEW
Systemic disorders may alter the onset and clinical course of periodontal
diseases, resulting in more rapid and advanced destruction, increased
risk of tooth loss, and the need for alterations in dental therapy
aimed at control of oral diseases and restoration of masticatory function
and esthetics. Recent research has also focused on the converse side
of this relationship; namely, the influence of periodontal infection
on other organ systems. This course is designed to review the
interrelationships between oral health and systemic conditions such
as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and
pregnancy.
OBJECTIVES
Following this presentation, attendees will:
• Understand the impact of systemic disorders on the periodontium and other
oral tissues.
• Comprehend the current evidence for the potential impact of periodontal
infection on
the pathogenesis of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, the risks for
adverse pregnancy outcomes, and the metabolic
control of diabetes mellitus.
• Know the mechanisms through which periodontal infection may have systemic
effects.
• Be able to integrate this information into the clinical practice of dentistry.
