OVERVIEW
This course will focus on the practice of Motivational Interviewing,
an easy, effective, non-threatening method for dealing with patient
resistance and increasing patient motivation and compliance. It will
also provide pharmacotherapy information for the practice of tobacco
cessation in dental practice including: indications, dosage and recommendations
for current cessation pharmacotherapy.

PRESENTERS
DANIEL L. JONES, D.D.S., Ph.D., received his PhD degree in Psychology from Baylor
University in 1978 and his DDS from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1989. He is
Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences at Baylor College
of Dentistry, a member of Texas A&M Health Science Center in Dallas, Texas.
He has authored numerous full-length publications and abstracts, and has lectured
extensively on behavioral and pharmacological approaches to nicotine cessation
for students, health care professionals and the public. He was co-founder of
Texas Dental Oncology Education Program in 1992, which is supported by the Texas
Cancer Council to provide training to Texas health care professionals on oral
cancer prevention and detection, and management of the oral sequelae of cancer
therapy.
KATHLEEN VENDRELL RANKIN, D.D.S., attained her dental degree from the Baylor
College of Dentistry in 1977. She is a Professor and Associate Chair of the Department
of Public Health Sciences at Baylor College of Dentistry. In addition, she is
the Director of the Baylor Tobacco Cessation Clinic and Dental Director of Dental
Oncology Education Program.
Dr. Rankin is the author of tobacco cessation module for the nationwide American
Dental Association courses funded by the National Cancer Institute on oral cancer
and tobacco cessation. She is the principal investigator on an RO1 NIDCR grant
to develop and longitudinally assess a tobacco cessation curriculum for dental
students. Dr. Rankin is in her 16th year as Director of the Dental Oncology Education
Program, a statewide oral cancer education project funded by the Texas Cancer
Council.
