OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this course, attendees should be able to:
• Explain components of risk assessment for dental caries,
periodontal disease, and oral cancer.
• Apply risk assessment tools to identify patients who are
at risk for oral disease(s).
• Apply prevention strategies based upon risk factors for
these oral diseases.
OVERVIEW
This course describes risk assessment tools for oral diseases that
can be used to provide a framework for the application of disease
prevention strategies in practice. The first section of this course
will outline concepts and components of risk assessment for dental
caries, periodontal disease and oral cancer. The second section
of this course takes the risk assessment tools and applies them
to a plan of prevention for these diseases. In this program, the
attendee will discuss and examine protocols for both risk assessment
and prevention. The course uses case-based assessments to demonstrate
how a risk assessment approach can be applied to preventive practice
that will enhance current practice. Challenges and opportunities
for risk based approaches to patient care, predicated on evidence-based
practice, will be introduced. The course is guided by the book,
Prevention in Clinical Oral Health Care.
