Specialized Training & Preceptorships
Prosthodontics, Dental Diagnostic Science and Orthodontics
We offer specialized programs in the areas of Prosthodontics, Dental Diagnostic Science and Orthodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. This training program allows individuals to receive specialized instruction ranging from one month to one year and possibly more. This program does not award academic credits, however, if completed satisfactorily the student will receive a "Certificate of Completion" from the department.
The average tuition is $3000 per month for specialized instruction plus any fees and surcharges necessary to support the training. The final total amount can vary (higher or lower) depending on the actual structure of your program. Some fees and surcharges may not be necessary. The department will make this final financial determination following consideration of individualized program characteristics, on a case-by-case basis. The following represents an average cost to consider for a yearlong study:
Tuition ($3,000/month) $36,000.00
Instrument Leasing Fee $2,000.00
Supplemental Kit fee $350.00
Implant Course Surcharge $500.00
Laboratory Coat Rental fee $75.00
Professional Liability Insurance* $00.00*
TOTAL $38,925.00
(*If your program includes patient contact, liability insurance is required. It will be the responsibility of the applicant to provide proof of coverage before beginning the program. For your convenience, please access GE Medical Protective
(https://www.gemedicalprotective.com) and the Fortress Professional Liability Insurance Providers (https://www.fortressins.com) Websites. PLEASE NOTE: Not all programs include patient contact.)
You will be required to pay all fees, surcharges, and tuition in full before you begin the program. If you are unable to secure the entire amount, we are requesting that you make a down payment totaling one half of the tuition cost plus all fees and surcharges. The balance will be due before the completion of the first half of the instruction period. NOTE: The payment information is “general” and is subject to change depending on the Preceptorship Program and/or Department requirements. Specific payment information will be provided upon acceptance into a program. Please understand that your acceptance into this program will not allow us to refund any or portions of the tuition and fee total. Failure to make payments in full, as described here, will result in dismissal from the program.
Day to day living expenses, housing, utilities, transportation, plus all related costs are the responsibility of the student. The University has determined that an investment of approximately $20,000 is required to cover these expenses. We can assist you in finding suitable housing through a private firm that specializes in apartment search. They will personally take you to various properties to view. They do not charge for this service and have a successful track record in assisting individuals to find housing. In most cases, you will be required to pay various deposits and the first month's rent on the apartment of your choice. You will need to correspond directly with them regarding your specific needs. I recommend you call them at 210-525-0296. They are listed as "Apartment Locator Service". We do have motels across the street from the school that you can stay at during your search and the price range varies from $45.00 to 90.00 per day. Let us know if you need the phone numbers, or assistance in reserving a room.
If you are a non-domestic applicant, please find enclosed information regarding the acquisition of the correct visa, which you must have to enter the United States to receive special training. This process will require at least 12 weeks and must be completed before you can enter the United States and be accepted into our program at the Dental School. Please be aware that you are required to submit documents of financial support before a visa can be requested, as the university can not sponsor your training. This letter will be requested after a final total for tuition, fees, surcharges, and living expenses has been determined.
You will be notified of the final cost of the program and acceptance into our preceptorship program by letter. At that time you will need to quickly provide us with any additional information and a nonrefundable down payment to secure a place in the training program.
