Overview
The newly discovered condition of bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis
of the jaw (BRONJ) has captured the attention of both the patient
and healthcare professional. One’s perspective on this issue
is largely dependent on one’s occupation. The dentist is concerned
over the lack of effective therapies to manage BRONJ, while the physician
is concerned the arbitrary reduction in bisphosphonate use is not
in the patient’s best interest.
The patient feels helplessly caught in the middle. An appropriate
understanding of the use of bisphosphonates, and the risks they entail,
is essential to develop and implement timely preventive and therapeutic
strategies that are compatible with the patient’s physical
and emotional ability to undergo and respond to dental care.
Objectives
With the aid of Power Point slides and an interactive discussion
format, this course is intended to improve the practitioner’s
understanding of the bisphosphonates, their use in medical practice,
and their potential impact on the dental patient.
