CONTINUUM
OVERVIEW
This is a four-course continuum, which
will involve lecture, laboratory and clinical dentistry with
the philosophy that “hands-on” is
the key to learning. It will cover the spectrum of restorative dentistry
from the moment the phone rings and the patient calls your office
until the post treatment consultation is completed. The class will
stay together for the entire four-course curriculum, which will meet
every three months for one year.
CONTINUUM OBJECTIVES
September 12-13: To specifically address the philosophy
of excellence, The Cross of Life, The Cross of Dentistry, personality
styles, the initial examination, what to do first, the
pre-clinical interview, health history, co-discovery TMJ muscle and
occlusal examination, periodontal examination, the tooth by tooth
examination, the use of study models, mounting casts, photos, centric
relation, use, purpose and construction of a monoplane bite splint.
Also included will be the actual construction, seating, adjustment,
and delivery in a clinical setting. A discussion of patient management
and expectations for a splint will be included. A Vericheck exercise
to learn repeatability of centric relations will complete this session.
At the end of the session, each participant will be expected to complete
some specific tasks prior to the next meeting.
November 21-22
To address progress to date
for each participant, occlusion and its importance in the restorative
practice, the trail equilibration in a laboratory setting, occlusion
equilibration, esthetics, smiles, photos for use in laboratory
communication, laboratory prescriptions, shades and shade taking.
The diagnosis
and treatment planning of anterior reconstruction cases in lecture
and lab setting, anterior preparations, including specific burs,
finish lines, biologic width and ovate pontics will be included.
Also anterior esthetic, polychromatic temporaries, both chairside
and laboratory fabricated will be discussed and constructed in
the laboratory. At the end of this session, each participant will
be
expected to complete some specific tasks prior to the next meeting.
January 23-24
To address progress to date for each participant,
the diagnosis and treatment of posterior reconstruction cases,
posterior preparations, including specific burs, finish lines,
biologic width
considerations, retention and reduction. The use of a Broadrick
Flag will be discussed, demonstrated and completed by each participant.
Posterior temporaries, materials, colors, chairside and laboratory
construction, long spans and their reinforcement and the actual
lab
construction of temporaries will occur. Final impressions, impression
materials, techniques, electrosurgery, lab communication, delivery,
adjustment and cementation of the final restorations in
addition to some specific tasks to be completed prior to the next
meeting.
May 15-16
To address progress
to date for each participant, diagnosis and treatment of difficult
cases including severe wear, anterior
open bites, perio/prosthetic cases, and ortho/surgical cases. A
discussion of the “R” rule, the rule of thirds, sequencing
treatment, scheduling and calculating fees for large case will
complete the
continuum.
PRESENTERS
COURSE DIRECTOR
JACK I. SHIRLEY, D.D.S., received his dental degree
from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1979. He
has maintained a private practice in San Antonio, Texas for over twenty years.
In addition to his practice, Dr. Shirley has been associated with The Pankey
Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Key Biscayne, Florida for eighteen
years. During much of this time, he has as served on the Institute’s Visiting
Faculty, Board of Trustees.
Currently he is the President of the LD Pankey Dental Foundation, Inc., the nonprofit
oversight Board of the Pankey Institute.
THOMAS W. DAWSON, D.D.S., graduated
from the University of Texas Dental Branch in1974 and has maintained
a restorative practice in Arlington, Texas for the past 34 years.
He has served as a faculty member with the L.D. Pankey Institute
since 1982. He has also been on their Board of Directors and most
recently served on the Board of Trustees. Dr. Dawson has also received
the Master Practitioner Award from the University of Texas Dental
Branch Alumni Association. He is a member of the American and Texas
Dental Associations. He has been the Arlington Dental Study Club
President, Program Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer.
