The Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Using Oral Appliances

Paul M. McLornan, B.D.S.

OVERVIEW
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has been identified by the NIH in its Health Goals for 2010 as one of the most prevalent and most under diagnosed medical conditions. Left untreated the condition has significant associated morbidity and mortality. In his presentation Dr McLornan will describe; the condition, the differences between snoring and sleep apnea, how it is diagnosed and treated by the medical community, how we as dentists can work with our medical colleagues to diagnose OSA, how we as dentists have an important role in treating snoring and OSA patients, use actual patient cases to illustrate the steps in treatment, how to introduce the treatment of OSA into your practice, current research into the dental treatment of OSA and why this is fast becoming one of the hottest topics in dentistry.

Dr. McLornan will demonstrate the use of the George Gauge in making jaw relation records for the fabrication of oral appliances to treat OSA. He will also demonstrate how home sleep monitors can be used by dentists to monitor the efficacy of oral appliance therapy. Successful treatment of this very prevalent condition is not only a huge practice builder but can be very professionally rewarding for the treating dentist. To successfully treat an OSA sufferer using an oral appliance is probably the most profound effect a dentist can have on the quality and quantity of that patient's life.

OBJECTIVES
• Demonstrate the use of the George Gauge
• Making jaw relation records for the fabrication of oral appliances to treat OSA
