Luncheons for Learning
Osteoporosis and Bisphosphonates: An Update
Sidney L. Bourgeois, Jr, D.D.S.
Format
One day a month a speaker discusses a dental topic during lunch. The sessions are informal and the group has an opportunity to interact with the speaker during a short discussion period at the end of the lecture. It requires only about one and one-half hour of your time to learn the latest developments in many areas of dentistry. It also offers the opportunity to get better acquainted with your colleagues and their staff since all dental allied personnel and technicians are also invited to attend.
Overview
Bisphosphonates have been around for over a century. They have been used in a variety of industrial and home situations. More recently they have been used in the treatment of osteoporosis. In 2003 Dr. Robert Marx introduced a complication of bisphosphonate therapy he termed bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis. The dental management of patients on bisphosphonates has spanned extremes since 2003. As a better understanding of the medications and the risk and potential complications have been elucidated, more defined recommendations for the dental treatment of patients on bisphosphonates have been put forth.
Objectives
Upon completion of the course participants will understand:
• The etiology and prevalence of osteoporosis
• The impact of osteoporosis and its treatment on health care costs

• The latest information regarding the dental management of patients on bisphosphonates for the treatment of osteoporosis.
